Earthquake Retrofitting for Vibiana Cathedral

Earthquake Retrofitting for Vibiana Cathedral
Los Angeles, Los Angeles County,
California, USA

After the Diocese of Los Angeles gave up posession of this early house of worship in Southern California, it was converted into a performing arts and events center. Quake damage had done a bit of damage to the limestone and brick veneer. Intervention for this earthquake retrofit project involved the removal, restoration, and reinstallation of numerous limestone units, as well as the placement of over 2,000 stainless steel veneer anchors. Both removal and installation of the limestone veneer units required the use of special rigging and hoisting equipment to protect both the integrity of the stones and the safety of the craftspeople.
