Restoring History: The Ventura, California, Olivas Adobe Project Completed

U.S. National Register of Historic Places, California Historical Landmark No. 115

The Olivas Adobe, a treasured piece of local history that provides a window into the region’s rich cultural legacy, is tucked away in Ventura, California. Our team at Kaptive C&P recently finished a large restoration project that was intended to remedy the structure’s water damage.

We clearly saw evidence of moisture intrusion during our initial investigation, especially at the connectors at the roofline above the plaster wall. There were multiple damp patches visible under the eaves after a recent storm, which raised worries about possible leakage. While it’s common to attribute these problems to heavy rain, it has been established that water usually doesn’t travel upward, suggesting a deeper systemic issue.

We discovered that about 25% of the wall near the border of the roof was unstable, indicating a roof leak above. Our inspection discovered deficiencies in the flashing, which allowed water to permeate and cause damage. We came to the conclusion that the wall needed to be completely dismantled and rebuilt in order to preserve the integrity of the structure, as a partial repair would not be sufficient.

We removed the damaged materials carefully because they were at least three inches down into the adobe. The wall that needed to be repaired was nineteen feet long and sixteen feet high on the right and eight feet high on the left.

The project was effectively finished because of the knowledge and commitment of the Kaptive C&P team. We made sure that every little thing was taken care of, maintaining the Olivas Adobe’s distinctive architectural value and strengthening its resilience to future weather-related problems.

We are honored to have helped preserve a monument that has so much significance for the Ventura community and its history as we celebrate the restoration’s completion. We want to make sure that future generations will be moved by the stories of the Olivas Adobe through our work.
