San Juan Bautista
California, USA
The wood and metal windows and doors of the Plaza Hotel San Juan Bautista had suffered from frequent use and exposure to the elements. Kaptive WoodWorks undertook the task of replicating several of these windows and doors, fabricating complete units that faithfully matched the originals, down to the species of Oak wood.
Our skilled in-house carpenter rehung and reset the doors to ensure a perfect fit within the door frames, while also refurbishing the hardware to its former glory. Adhering to the Park Service’s preservation guidelines, all original hardware was meticulously restored rather than replaced. Paint removal was carried out through a process of boiling or using chemical strippers.
Despite some hardware being non-functional, the Park Service advised against repair, for preservation purposes. Additionally, we undertook the custom fabrication of new exterior railing spindles, to complete the wood restoration of the property.
